LYNCH MOTORS DESIGN ELECTRIC DRIVE SOLUTION FOR LONDON UNDERGROUND RAIL GRINDERS
In the 2000’s, in partnership with our customer Tool and Steel Products Ltd, we created an electric drive solution to convert London Underground railway grinders from petrol to electric, to improve safety, sustainability and ease of transit.
Nearly 20 years later, the electric rail grinders are still going strong, with regular maintenance & servicing from the team at Lynch Motors.
Traditionally railway grinders are petrol powered, which causes issues when used underground due to the restricted air flow. Converting the rail grinders (which were used on the underground) to electric, removed the risk of sparks igniting due to combustion fumes, as well creating a more pleasant and fume free environment.
For this electric drive solution we designed, manufactured and installed a Lynch electric motor, controller, battery pack and wiring configuration to enable the grinders to offer a safer and more sustainable solution.
The electric rail grinder is a safer alternative, not only due to the omission of combustion fuels but also due to the in-built controller and voltage protection, which protects the battery and increases the life of the unit.
LiP04 BATTERY TECHNOLOGY SIGNIFICANTLY REDUCES WEIGHT OF ELECTRIC DRIVE SOLUTION
Two versions of the electric drive solutions were created, one using a lead acid AGM battery and one using a LiPo battery. The AGM version weighed approx 120kg, but the LiPo battery version reduced the weight to just 60kg, making it far easier to carry and transport.
The LiP04 battery technology used has more than doubled the running time too. Moreover, the new units have built in safety features, are easy to operate and make rail grinding more environmentally friendly.
WHAT IS AN ELECTRIC RAIL GRINDER
Wear and tear on train tracks require maintenance and welding in some areas. In order to level the track post repairs, the track needs grinding to make it smooth again....so you don’t spill your cuppa on your journey!
